The Great Transformation
The Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences (HKMMS) is a medical science-themed museum in Hong Kong, established in 1996. It has been collecting and preserving Hong Kong medical science development historical relics, using literature and materials to introduce the history of medical industry development during the early development of Hong Kong.
HKMMS is a Edwardian-style building, with a narrow corridor and well ventilated due to numerous windows. Its Chinese roof brings a scent of local culture.
Before Long
The museum was referred to as the Old Bacteriological Institute that focused on the plague commonly spread at that time, and had been operating since 15th March, 1906. As the first medical laboratory in Hong Kong, the major duty is to investigate the pandemic. Later, it was responsible for vaccine cultivation. After the 2nd World War, it was renamed as the Pathological Institute to expand its working scope.
History of Hong Kong medicine
In HKMMS, there are 11 unique exhibition halls to describe the history of Hong Kong medical science and how diseases were controlled. It also covers various medical devices and introduces the hygiene and nursing work of Hong Kong, the plague in 19th century Hong Kong, laboratory and showcase of different Chinese herbal medicine.

How to get there: Method A – Start from Central–Mid-Levels escalator (after 10:30a.m.) via this escalator to Caine Road. Then walk west along the footpath for about 10 minutes to Ladder Street. Next, go down and turn into Caine Lane at the first junction on your left. The Museum is on your right. Method B – Leave at MTR Sai Ying Pun Station Exit C. Walk along Bonham Road and Caine Road towards Central for about 15 minutes. Turn into Caine Lane at Staircase Street to reach the Museum. |
